Background

A number of quality mares sired by Fulton, inspired us to further increase our breeding programme and consequently we began importing semen from the continent. Based on the success of using AI on our own mares this has developed in to an AI service for other serious breeders, looking to improve the stock they produce. The service we offer has the valued option of using our own resident stallions of world-class pedigree bloodlines when veterinary budgets are reached.

Veterinary Care

The success of our AI services is highly attributed to Mark Baines BVSc MRCVS, partner of the much respected veterinary practice Fyrnwy Equine Clinics, Shropshire.

Advantages of AI

The technique allows owners to alleviate problems which otherwise may prevent their mares being used for breeding. Mares with a foal at foot, or mares with an injury, not detrimental to foaling but that prevents them from supporting a natural covering, can all benefit from AI. More importantly the use of AI can prevent the transmission of infection and lessen the risk of injury to both mare and stallion.

About the service

AI takes a lot of time and skill; the mare’s ovulation cycle is followed over a period of 2-7 days, the mare is scanned up to 4 times a day at 6 hourly intervals, until ovulation is reached and then insemination takes place day or night

Pre- insemination ultrasound scans of the mare’s ovaries give a much greater insight in to the progression of her cycle, which aids to pinpoint an accurate insemination time and thereby helps to ensure a pregnancy.

A post-insemination ultrasound scan is normally conducted after only 14 days to detect either a positive or negative pregnancy or a further 28-day scan to check correct development of the foetus.

Conception rates

The day to day close working relationship between the AI centre proprietor Edward Evans and the veterinary support is a major factor in ensuring high conception rates.

Facilities

At Westpoint Stud mares are able to have AI in a natural environment with other mares and stallions. The centre has purpose built mare handling facilities thereby ensuring the safety of mares, foals and handlers. Visiting mares will have access to electric fenced paddocks or excellent stabling (15ft or 12ft square boxes) if requested.

Semen ordering

Mare owners choose the semen they wish their mare to be inseminated with. This then, if requested, may be ordered by ourselves and delivered direct to our stud, thereby cutting down on costs and time incurred by mare owners.

We endeavour to ensure mare owners are regularly updated on their mare’s progress through the AI programme.
